This service will feature music that spans eras and styles. The organ voluntaries draw from the French Romantic tradition. “Cortège et Litanie,” the prelude, is a kaleidoscope of organ colors composed by the celebrated French organist Marcel Dupré. Gaston Belier’s “Toccata” — an exhilarating exercise in finger dexterity — will bring the liturgy to a close. Late Renaissance composer Michael Praetorius composed the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in a hymn-like setting. The anthem, “Gently, Lord,” is a shape-note-inspired work by Shenandoah University composer William Averitt. Much like the summer Evensong, we will welcome voices from neighboring parishes.
