Baptism at Saint James’ Warrenton
The sacrament of baptism is central to The Episcopal Church’s understanding of the Christian faith. It is the full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ’s Body, the church.
At Saint James’, baptisms typically take place during the 10:15 a.m. service on Sunday morning. A priest baptizes the candidate “in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,” and then marks on the forehead with the sign of the cross. The newly baptized is “sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ’s own for ever.” The celebrant and congregation then welcome the newly baptized into the “household of God” and promise to do all they can to support the candidates for baptism in their life in Christ.
In the Episcopal tradition, anyone of any age can be baptized, including children and infants. Each candidate for baptism must be sponsored by one or more baptized Christians — these sponsors are sometimes called godparents.
