Worship servers

Worship at Saint James’ is a corporate and cooperative experience, reflecting The Episcopal Church’s belief that we all have a role to play in the kingdom of God. In any given week there are more than two-dozen people — not including the choir — who make our worship services possible and enrich the liturgy. These volunteers range from the elementary-school-aged acolyte processing down the center aisle to the usher helping the elderly person to their seat.

If you’re interested in serving during worship at Saint James’, contact volunteer coordinator Bené Giglio at bene.giglio@saintjameswarrenton.org.

Acolytes

Acolytes at Saint James’ are generally young people from third grade through high school. Carrying torches and crosses, they take part in the procession and recession at the beginning and end of each service and lead the Gospel procession in the middle of the service, emphasizing the importance of those moments in the liturgy. They also assist the priest at the altar during the service.

Altar Guild

The Altar Guild prepares the altar — the focal point of Episcopal worship — for each service. Members of the guild care for all the linens, brass and silver used in services.

Flower Guild

The Flower Guild is responsible for providing flower arrangements for the altar and chapel. Members also prepare floral arrangements for special occasions, like weddings and funerals.

Greeters

Greeters are usually the first face parishioners and visitors see at Sunday-morning services. They welcome everyone who comes through our doors for worship, hand out bulletins, give directions and answer questions.

Chalice bearers

Chalice bearers are laypeople who help administer the consecrated elements of the Eucharist during Holy Communion.

Readers and prayer leaders

Each worship service at Saint James’ includes readings from the Bible — The Episcopal Church follows the Revised Common Lectionary — and prayers on behalf of the congregation. Readers and prayer leaders read those Scriptures and prayers aloud from the lectern during the service.

Ushers

Ushers at Saint James’ assist during worship by assisting the congregation, conducting the offertory and directing worshipers during Communion.

Video

Each Sunday’s 10:15 service, along with many special services and events, is livestreamed on YouTube thanks to the dedicated volunteers who operate the cameras and video equipment.
