From SJES: A new playground and a new school year
We began the new school year with joy and gratitude at our Summer Social on Sunday, Aug. 24. Approximately 400 members of our community gathered to celebrate the start of the school year and the debut of our newly upgraded playground. Father Ben offered a blessing over the space, and families enjoyed Moo Thru ice cream generously donated by an anonymous donor, craft beer provided by Barking Rose Brewery, and games and prizes sponsored by the Castle Insurance Agency. Live music by the band DMH filled the air, while the Church youth group raised funds for their mission trip by serving hot dogs and snacks.
This Summer Social was made possible by our overall event sponsor, Premier Turf and Landscaping, who not only underwrote the celebration but also completed the work that brought our playground to life. We are especially thankful for the leadership of owner Don Doxsee, landscape manager Hans Fairbank, and our own SJES parents Bri and Scott Trumble, who poured their time and talent into the project. Because of their dedication, an area once marked by unusable ground and long-standing drainage issues has become a safe, functional, and welcoming space for children and the community to enjoy for years to come.
We are deeply grateful to the Church community for your ongoing support of our School. Many of you played a role in making this playground project possible. Our Spring Gala paddle raiser provided the initial funding, and gifts through Give Local Piedmont allowed us to complete the work this summer. Both the playground renovation and the Summer Social were reminders of the vibrant partnership we share as church and school and the importance of our relationship for many families in our community.
We warmly invite all members of the Church to share in the daily life of our School. There are many ways to be involved, from serving as a substitute in the classroom, to lending a hand at special events, or to simply showing up to cheer on our students at performances and programs. We also hope you will mark your calendar for the annual Spring Gala on March 28, 2026. It is sure to be a fun-filled evening that celebrates the spirit of Saint James’ and helps provide vital resources for our faculty, staff and students. Please know that however you choose to participate, your presence and encouragement make a real difference. The unique bond that we share as Church and School is what sets us apart!
Finally, in case you didn’t know, the school year is now in full swing! On Aug. 20, we welcomed back 111 elementary students, and on Sept. 2, we will open our doors to 93 preschoolers. The excitement on campus is contagious as students settle into their routines, classrooms, and friendships. If you ever want to come by and visit the School in session, please email or call the office — we’d love to share it with you!
