Choral Evensong at St. Stephen's Catlett

  • St. Stephen's Episcopal Church 8695 Old Dumfries Road Catlett, Virginia, 20119 United States (map)

This choral Evensong includes hymns, prayers and Scripture to close the day, followed by a light reception. Besides the St. Stephen’s Catlett choir, members of Saint James’ Warrenton, St. Stephen’s Culpeper and Christ Church Gordonsville will lend their voices on the eve of the feast day of St. Margaret of Scotland.

Evensong is a sung version of Daily Evening Prayer. This beloved Anglican tradition took shape during the English Reformation, drawing on the cycle of daily prayer formalized in late antiquity and practiced especially in monasteries. While the music has at times evolved as new composers lend their gifts, the words have remained almost entirely unchanged since Thomas Cranmer’s 1549 Book of Common Prayer first included “an ordre for Evensong through-out the yeare.”
