Skin Cancer Awareness Month is observed every May to raise public awareness about the dangers of skin cancer, the importance of prevention, and the need for early detection. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70.

The three main types are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and melanoma, which is the deadliest form of skin cancer. The leading cause of skin cancer is over-exposure to UV rays from the sun or tanning beds.

Prevention is key:

— Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher every day.
— Reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming.
— Wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses.
— Seek shade during peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
— Perform regular skin self exams and visit your dermatologist annually.
