May 1-7 is INTERNATIONAL COMPOST AWARENESS WEEK!

Why is composting important? It sequesters carbon and, at the same time, provides rich soils for gardening. Throwing organic material into the landfill is a cause of methane production, one of the worst greenhouse gases. This week is a good time to research and begin composting at home. And plan to join in the  Gardening Working Group by zoom on Monday, May 16, 7 PM. This group of small and large gardeners from around our diocese gathers monthly to have fun and share tips and new projects. They welcome anyone interested in gardening. Email <cardoon2016@gmail.com> to register to receive the link.

FARM & SOLAR TOUR:

The Fauquier Climate Change Group (FCCG) and Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) are planning a future seminar on the use of solar power in farming. They will be visiting the Ellis' Clifton Farm, Culpeper, on May 17 at 10:30 AM to see their 40-panel solar array, 2,000 trees planted on bottom-land for carbon sequestration by Friends of the Rappahannock, and several  American chestnut tree seedlings, planted as part of ACF’s research. <www.acf.org>  Email Kathy Ellis at <cliftonfarm1@gmail.com> if you’d like to come along.

There are several tax credit opportunities  that may be of interest if you are planning a solar project:

Solarize Piedmont (thru PEC) applications end June 30: https://www.pecva.org/our-work/energy-matters/solarize-piedmont/

Federal solar tax credits for residential expire 2024 unless renewed by Congress.
