Dear friends and colleagues at Saint James’,

I hope this message finds you well. It is with a mixture of sadness, surprise and profound gratitude that I share some personal news. In an unexpected turn of events, I have been offered the position of Director of Music and Organist at New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in downtown Washington, D.C. This historic church, where Abraham Lincoln once worshiped and just a few blocks from the White House, holds a remarkable legacy of faith, music and community. To have been offered the opportunity to serve there is both humbling and inspiring, and I have accepted the call.

When this position became available, my professors at Peabody — with strong ties to New York Avenue — encouraged me and several colleagues to apply. They spoke highly of the church’s distinguished musical tradition and its significant role in the spiritual and cultural life of our nation’s capital. This change was wholly unexpected, and the decision to leave Saint James’ has been among the most difficult I have faced. Over the years, this community has been far more than a workplace: it has been a sanctuary. During some of the most challenging periods of my life, the support and kindness I received here carried me through. Words cannot fully express my gratitude for the compassion and encouragement I found among you.

I wish to extend my deepest thanks to the choir, the handbell choir, and the church band for their exceptional artistry and dedication. My gratitude also goes to Larke Pain, whose leadership of the school’s music program has been an inspiration. To Father Ben, whose spiritual guidance and steadfast support have meant more to me than words could ever say. To our remarkable section leads, whose commitment has enriched every service and occasion. I will be forever grateful for our wonderful congregation, vestry, and leadership across so many diverse and wonderful ministries. Each of you has been vital to the life of Saint James’, and it has been an honor to work alongside you.

While my role is changing, my connection to Saint James’ remains enduring. Maddox will continue his education here, and I look forward to remaining present in this community in new ways. Above all, I hope to sustain the friendships and bonds I have been privileged to form. Your generosity, encouragement and camaraderie have profoundly shaped my journey.

Thank you for the innumerable moments of joy, collaboration and growth we have shared. Though parting is bittersweet, I depart with a full heart, deep appreciation, and hopeful anticipation that our paths will continue to intersect.

With warmest regards and sincerest thanks,

—Robert Baird

Robert’s farewell Sunday will be July 27.
